Institutions
Missoula Art Museum
Including a major renovation of the original Carnegie Library building and a new addition, the project expanded gallery space, collections storage, and staff offices into the new addition, opening up the original building for classrooms, a library, and gallery space. Sustainable features included daylighting, UV filtering, HVAC commissioning, and automatic lighting controls. The original building is bridged to the new sandstone block with a glass facade and canopy over the entrance
Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is committed to the conservation of natural habitats, a mission illustrated in their facility by its careful design, use of materials, and location on the site. A feature of the Visitor Center is the building’s structure of parallel strand lumber, a composite wood product. Incorporating this type of material allows for the use of smaller beams and columns, minimizing the use of old-growth timber and creating a distinctive aesthetic. The buildings incorporate a host of conservation strategies and their interior spaces are designed to be flexible, so as the foundation grows and changes the facility can do the same.
Armed Forces Reserve Center
The Missoula Armed Forces Reserve Center was designed along a central axis that aligns the main building with the maintenance shop and serves as a dividing line between the user groups, the National Guard and Army Reserve. All joint use spaces straddle this axis to provide convenient access. The design of the facility emphasizes primary use and shared spaces with a vertical emphasis. One of the primary goals for the project was to create a design both durable and flexible, utilizing metal panels, a masonry veneer, and CMU both as wall structure and wall finish in areas that receive heavy use.
Missoula Childrens' Theatre
MCT's Center for the Performing Arts inserts a new 332 seat theatre into an existing gymnasium of what was once a school which now serves as the home of the internationally known Missoula Children's Theatre. The project includes an addition to the existing building to house a lobby and reception gallery, additional classrooms on an upper level and a workshop adjacent to the new theatre. The addition was designed to compliment the existing 1930’s art deco elementary school building and give it a playful, yet strong civic presence at the same time.
Ronald McDonald House
In addition to providing extended stay housing for families, the Missoula Ronald McDonald House contains a conference center focusing on children’s issues. The house provides accommodations for up to seven families, with the ability to incrementally add up to twelve additional family suites in the future. The design goal was to provide a secure and comforting environment to families with children who are enduring a medical crisis. The building was designed to take advantage of the views of nearby mountains, incorporate natural materials and playful details and provide an abundance of daylight.
Missoula Prerelease
Completed in 1999, the Missoula Pre-Release Center is a 100-bed, 40,000 square foot facility for offenders serving time in prison and serves as a transition from prison to release. The offenders are required to get a job in the community and are involved in various programs that teach independence and responsibility. The average stay is 12 months. The facility houses 80 men and 20 women in separate areas and includes administrative space, program space for offenders and a full service kitchen. The project is located adjacent to the new Missoula County Detention Center on Mullan Road.
